Embark on a winter journey into the heart of Algonquin Provincial Park’s backcountry, where quiet trails and old-growth forests lead to some of the region’s most beautiful cold-season landscapes.
The day centers around a moderate full-day hike to Bat Lake (~6 km round trip), winding through towering pine and hemlock stands, crossing peaceful winter streams, and passing through forest that feels far removed from the busy areas of the park. The trail gradually opens to the crystal-clear waters of Bat Lake, often frozen and framed by snow-laden trees, creating an ideal spot to pause, enjoy lunch, and take in the stillness of Algonquin in winter.
In addition to the Bat Lake hike, we’ll also stop at two striking winter waterfall locations. Our first is Long Slide, where fast-moving water freezes into textured ice flows and layered formations, showcasing winter’s raw power and movement.
Later in the day, we’ll visit High Falls in Bracebridge, Muskoka’s most famous waterfall, transformed in winter into a dramatic display of frozen spray, ice columns, and flowing water against snow-covered rock. This tour blends deep backcountry immersion with accessible winter highlights, offering a full and visually rich winter hiking experience.
